In a tribute to the Australian band that adopted a poem written “out on the patio” of a Bundaberg region home to create the iconic song Sounds of Then, the Bundaberg Regional Council will name a new street in Kalkie Ganggajang Way.

Civil works associated with Kalkie development Paddington Grove Stage 6 involve the construction of three new roads.  One road is an extension of Linderberg Street and will be known as such but the other two will require original names.

At a planning meeting, the Bundaberg Regional Council decided on Ganggajang Way for one of the two roads.

Planning Committee Chairman Cr Ross Sommerfeld said the Ganggajang band was deserving of special recognition due to its links to the local area.

“Ganggajang’s hit Sounds of Then was derived from the words of poet Mark Callaghan, who compiled his best work on the patio of a house not far from the new Kalkie development,” Cr Sommerfeld said.

“For those who don’t know it, the song relates to the experience of watching “lightening crack over cane fields”; something very unique to the Bundaberg region and symbolic of Australian farming culture and the sugar cane industry more generally.”

The second street, a short cul-de-sac, will be named Randall Court in recognition of Bundaberg Homes’ Directors Michael and Debbie Randall, who have contributed substantially to the successful subdivision.
